Three fishermen who found themselves in distress while at sea were rescued this morning in an operation conducted by the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF).
According to information received from the Disaster Management Centre, the fishermen’s vessel had encountered difficulties shortly after departing from Balapitiya Fisheries Harbour.
Acting on directives from the Ministry of Defence, a Bell-412 helicopter from the SLAF’s No. 4 Squadron based at Ratmalana was deployed for the rescue mission.
The three fishermen were extracted from the vessel and airlifted to safety. They were subsequently admitted to Balapitiya Base Hospital for medical attention.
To maintain continuous aerial surveillance and ensure rapid response to emergencies, the Air Force has positioned Bell-412 helicopters at Ratmalana, as well as Bell-212 helicopters at the Hingurakgoda and Palaly bases.
