The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) will launch its campaign for the Presidential election on May Day with the objective to field its own candidate, party General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam said.
He said the decision has been taken following discussions with Mr. Basil Rajapaksa who returned to the country last week.
Mr. Kariyawasam said that the theme would be local economy and united country along with the focus of the development of the rural economy.
He said that the main parties have already failed to focus on these themes.
Mr. Kariyawasam said that the consensus was that they should not be supporting another candidate and instead field their own candidate.
He said Mr. Basil Rajapaksa will play a key role in organizing the campaign with plans to have district level campaigns.
