The Police Special Task Force (STF) seized a consignment of Indian beedi, which was illegally brought from India by sea to the country and was being transported by a lorry from Kalpitiya towards Palaviya this morning.
Three suspects residents of Kalpitiya, Palliwasalthure and Wennappuwa were also arrested along with this 1091 kg of Beedi leaves.
The security forces says that a racket has been operating for a long time in which beedi leaves brought from India to Kalpitiya by sea are kept in secret storage there and then transported by lorries to different parts of the island.
The consignment and the three suspects have been handed over to the Puttalam Police for further investigations.
