Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa today called the Election Commission to hold Local Government polls soon after the Budget debate is concluded on March 21.
Mr Premadasa and representatives of opposition parties met with the Election Commission members and said that they were prepared for the local government polls soon after the budget debate ended, contrary to claims by government members that the opposition was trying to delay the polls.
“We want to ensure that the budget debate is given the first priority and thereafter elections can be held,” he told Journalists after the meeting.
He recalled, that it was his party, the SJB had sought a court order when the Local Government polls were delayed.
SLMC leader Rauf Hakeem, Leader of the Upcountry People’s Front V.Radhakrishnan and MP Rohitha Abeygunawardena were among the opposition members who met the EC members.
