President's Counsel Saliya Pieris was elected the 26th President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) a short while ago.
He polled 5162 of the total vote while President's Counsel Kuvera de Zoysa, who also contested for the BASL presidency, polled 2807 votes.
Accordingly, Mr Pieris was elected BASL President for the 2021/22 term with a thumping majority of 2355 votes.
Polling was conducted at 87 centres islandwide and about 17, 000 lawyers who are BASL members were eligible to vote at the election.
Acting Solicitor General Sanjaya Rajaratnam served as the Chief Returning Officer at the election.
