Due to severe flooding, all schools in the Matara district will be closed on Monday (09) and Tuesday (10). Schools have been closed since Thursday (05) and the District Disaster Management Committee decided to extend this due to the harsh weather situation.
The Zonal Education Office, Matara, said that they do not yet know whether the flooding and closures will impact the grade 5 scholarship exams that are scheduled to be held on October 15.
So far 6967 families are stranded due to the severe flooding and 399 houses have sustained damages. On Thursday (05) the President instructed authorities to provide flood relief and to use the armed forces to assist with distribution.

A Sri Lanka Air Force Bell 212 helicopter belonging to the No. 72 squadron has crashed into the Madhuru Oya reservoir this morning, Air FOrce Media Spokesman Eranda Geeganage said.
Update: Five of the twelve passengers on board the bell 212 aircraft that crashed into the Maduru Oya today, have succumbed to their injuries, the SLAF said.
