Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (SDIG) Lalith Pathinayake has been appointed to oversee the Administration of the Police Department by the National Police Commission (NPC).
The NPC had consulted the Attorney General's Department before the appointment was made.
The DIG (Administration) post had fallen vacant after senior SDIG Nilantha Jayawardena was sent on compulsory leave until the Easter Sunday attack investigations are completed.
Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandun Tennakoon too was sent on compulsory leave on an order issued by the Supreme Court. Accordingly, both top positions in the Police Department had fallen vacant.
Election monitors had expressed concern that the non-availability of the IGP and DIG (Administration) could have an impact on the elections.
