Senior civil servant Lionel Fernando passes away

Mr Lionel Fernando, a distinguished civil servant and diplomat has passed away. He was born in 1936.
 
 
Mr Fernando's illustrious career spanned pivotal roles such as Secretary to the Ministry of Media, Tourism, and Aviation, Secretary to the Foreign Ministry, Sri Lankan Ambassador to France, and Governor of the North Eastern Province. 
 
He also served as Secretary to the Ministry of Civil Defence, Commissioner General of Rehabilitation and Essential Services, and Chairman of the Executive Council of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), a critical role associated with the United Nations.
 
Beyond governance, Mr Fernando significantly influenced Sri Lanka's cultural and media landscape as Chairperson of the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation.
 
His wife,  Somalatha Subasinghe , a prominent Sri Lankan actress, playwright, theatre director, and educator passed away earlier.
 
He is survived by  two daughters. One of his daughters, Kaushalya Fernando, a respected actress, director, and activist.
 
 
Mr Lionel Fernando's remains will be open for public viewing at Jayaratna VIP parlour on July 8, 2024, from 9:30 AM. The cremation ceremony will commence at the new crematorium (entrance from Kithulwatta Road) at 5:30 PM.
