The Sectoral Oversight Committee on Foreign Employment and Labour has uncovered that several plantation companies have defaulted on Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) payments and a large amount of arrears is due.
Concerns were raised during the Sectoral Oversight Committee on Foreign Employment and Labor meeting on June 22 under the Chairmanship of the MP Hector Appuhami.
It was also revealed before the committee that due to contradictions in the information given about 700 million rupees paid by the companies in the estate sector, it has not been possible to account.
MP Hector Appuhami further directed the representatives of the relevant plantation companies to line up to make the payment in arrears to the EPF and pending monthly payments in a methodical manner whilst securing the rights of employees.
In the meantime, the officials-in-charge were further advised by the committee to open accounts in line with the respective National Identity Card (NIC) number, in an effort to avoid challenges with regard to having many accounts for the same person.
