Director of the Castle Street Hospital for Women Dr. Ajith Danthanarayana announced this morning that a 37-year-old woman from Veeyangoda gave birth to sextuplets (six boys) on Sunday (October 15).
Dr. Danthanarayana said that the babies are now in good health although they are in the NICU.
He said that one newborn was transferred to the Lady Ridgeway Hospital (LRH) due to the lack of accommodation of incubators in the NICU at Castle Street.
The newborns weighed between 400g - 600g, he said.
He further said that the mother of the newborns were in the ICU yesterday, and is now doing well in a regular ward.
The father of the newborns, Mr. Perera said that they had been trying to conceive for twelve years.
He further said that they were expecting quintuplets (five) but learned that there was another child during the delivery.
