A group of residents in Sigiriya want the government to revoke a 32 year old Gazette notification underwhich some 12,600 acres has been declared a wildlife sanctuary.
The villagers on Monday cameout to stage a protest near the Wildlife office in Sigiriya demanding the revocation of the gazette notification has been issued.
They claim that the Gazette notification is being used by wildlife officials to penalize the villagers while certain persons involved in business activities in the area have not been affected.
Ven Pubbiliye Dhammananda thera also got involved in the protest campaign.
They claimed that if the gazette notification is removed they were capable of taking care in protection of the wildlife in the area.
