Six poachers who had been poaching inside the Yala National Park were arrested yesterday along with three firearms by officers from the Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC).
The carcass of a deer that had been killed and skinned by the poachers was also recovered along with torches, knives and dry rations used by the poachers.
All arrested suspects are young men below 30 years of age and are residents of Kataragama and Yala Junction. They are due to be produced before the Tissamaharama Magistrate's Court tomorrow.
The DWC said poaching inside Zone 1 of the Yala National Park had increased this month owing to the Esala season and DWC officers being deployed for duties associated to the 'Paada Yaatra.' As such, more patrols have been deployed inside the park, both in day time and night.
