Smuggled cigarettes worth 24 million seized: Customs

The Sri Lanka Customs yesterday seized foreign cigarettes estimated to be worth  Rs. 24 Million.
 
Customs Additional Director General and spokesman Seevali Arukgoda said that custom officers attached to the Narcotics Control Unit of  have seized a  quantity of foreign cigarettes smuggled into the country by Sri Lankan passengers.
 
The seizures took place on April 6, 2025, at the Bandaranaike International Airport. The passengers had arrived from Dubai on flights FZ 549, EK 652, and EK 654, and from India on flight 6E 1171. 
A total of 1,843 cartons of foreign cigarettes were confiscated during the operation.
According to the officials, the estimated street value of the seized cigarettes is approximately Rs. 24 million. The operation highlights ongoing efforts to curb illegal imports and protect state revenue.
