Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena has endorsed the certificate on the Online Safety Bill. Accordingly, the new law will come into effect from today (1), Parliament's Department of Communications stated.
The law will come into effect as the Online Safety Act No. 9 of 2024.
The draft Online Safety Bill was passed with amendments after a two-day Parliamentary debate held on January 23 and 24.
Speaker Abeywardena also endorsed the certificate on the National Hydrographic Bill, which was debated and passed with amendments on January 9 as well as the Contempt of a Court, Tribunal or Institution Bill, which was passed on January 10 with amendments.
These will now come into effect as the National Hydrographic Act No. 7 of 2024 and the Contempt of a Court, Tribunal or Institution Act No. 8 of 2024.
