The Election Commission (EC) issued a special notice today, outlining the legal provisions to be strictly followed on the day of the Local Government Election, scheduled for May 6, 2025.
The EC emphasized that all political parties, independent groups, candidates, and voters must comply with these regulations to ensure a smooth and fair election process.
According to the EC, the following activities are strictly prohibited within 500 meters of any polling station or near its entrance.
Canvassing for votes, requesting a voter to vote for a particular candidate, Influencing voters not to vote for a specifically named candidate and discouraging voting altogether.
The distribution of handbills, display of posters, or exhibition of pictures, photographs, or symbols related to any candidate is also strictly forbidden within the same area.
Inside polling stations, the use of mobile phones, photography, video recording, possession of firearms, smoking, drinking alcohol, and the use of other intoxicants are not permitted.
The Commission further stated that all social media account holders and administrators must refrain from photographing or filming polling stations or marked ballot papers, and from sharing such content on social media platforms, as it constitutes a violation of election laws.
The Commissioner General of Elections, Mr. Saman Sri Ratnayake, also stated that legal action will be taken against anyone found violating these guidelines.
