Sri Lanka shared its condolences with bereaved family members of the victims of the Air crash in India today.
“ We are deeply shocked and saddened by the loss of many lives in the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad. Our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members of the victims of this tragic incident,”, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
An Air India flight to London with 232 passengers and 10 crew members crashed shortly after takeoff today afternoon.
The aircraft, operating as Flight AI171 to London Gatwick, had gone down in a residential area just outside the airport perimeter.
Emergency response teams rushed to the scene, and rescue operations are currently underway. Casualty figures have not yet been officially confirmed.
In a statement, the airport authority announced a complete suspension of all flights until further notice.
Air India states the nationality details of those on board as follows: 169 Indian nationals, 53 British, one Canadian, and seven Portuguese passengers.
The cause of the crash remains unclear.
The details of the casualties have not been officially announced, but several of them had been killed instantly.
