The Sri Lanka Crime Investigation Department (CID) is collaborating with Chinese law enforcement authorities for joint investigations to tackle cybercrime involving foreign nationals.
The Chinese delegation was welcomed by Sri Lankan CID officers at their headquarters in Colombo on September 2, 2024. They are scheduled to remain in Sri Lanka for one month to facilitate these efforts.
Following invitations from the Ministry of the Public Security and the Foreign Ministry, the Chinese government has sent the team to assist the Sri Lanka CID in tackling cybercrime issues.
The CID has highlighted that challenges, such as language barriers, lack of software, and insufficient technical assistance are anticipated to be mitigated through this collaboration with the Chinese law enforcement team.
This partnership is expected to help reduce the increasing trend of transnational criminal activities in Sri Lanka and the broader region stated by the DIG of the CID Mr Rohan Premaratne to the TimesOnline.
DIG Premaratne further expressed his appreciation to the Chinese Embassy for their prompt support and for arranging the team’s visit to Sri Lanka on short notice.
