Sri Lanka further stepped up the COVID-19 vaccination programme amidst praise from the WHO.
Nearly 70,000 persons on Sunday (1) received the second dose of the Astrazeneca vaccine while the Army will be keeping two of its centres open 24 hours. The Viharamadevi Park centre was open on Sunday for 24 horus while the Diyatha Uyana centre too will be kept open round the clock for the next three days from today.
World Health Organisation (WHO) Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said he was glad to see that Sri Lanka was on track to fully vaccinate 10 per cent of the population by September.
“Thanks for their efforts, and continued vigilance on public health and social measures to suppress the virus,” he said in a twitter message.
Meanwhile, according to Government statistics, 925,242 persons had received the first dose of AstraZeneca vaccine as of yesterday (1), while of them 455,151 have received both vaccines.
The Sinopharm vaccine first dose has been received by 8 million persons and of them 1.7 million have received both vaccines.
