Sri Lankan Airlines jobs at risk; Minister Nimal Siripala

News

Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation Nimal Siriplala de Silva expressed concern about the potential loss of 6,000 jobs at SriLankan Airlines if immediate restructuring measures are not taken.

 The Minister told a press conference held at the Presidential Media Centre that the government cannot sustain the financial losses incurred by SriLankan Airlines and that it would be unfair to continue using taxpayer funds in this manner.
He said as part of their commitment to building a stable country, the government has already begun efforts to enlist the assistance of international financial experts in order to conduct the restructuring process in a transparent manner.

Minister  de Silva said;
“SriLankan Airlines, established as our national carrier many years ago, holds a unique position. While it managed to generate a profit of Rs. 30 million during the period it was under the control of Emirates Airlines, it has struggled to achieve profitability otherwise".
