JCT Oil Bank (Jaya Container Terminals LTD, Colombo Oil Bank) would be upgraded through the construction of new storage tanks, with a view to alleviating capacity limitations and meeting the demand for petroleum products, Transport, Highways, Port and Civil Aviation Minister Bimal Rathnayake said.
Today, 11 approved oil storage operators, such as the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC), are registered in the JCT Oil Bank.
The monthly demand, according to the ministry has now risen to around 60,000 metric tonnes, far exceeding the facility's present storage capacity.
The JCT Oil Bank processes 14 tanks with an installed capacity of 38,200 metric tonnes. Special pipelines transport oil from the storage tank to the port of Colombo.
The ministry explained that the expansion is planned in order to counteract the storage issues and ensure the infrastructure is aligned with the energy requirements of the nation.
