Sri Lanka’s Court of Appeal on Monday directed authorities to cancel a government gazette providing special tax concessions to four companies operating in the Port City.
This came at the request of local unions who had challenged the gazette on the grounds that the concessions were unfair and its hire-and-fire rules violated basic worker rights.
The concessions, granted through Extraordinary Gazette notifications No. 2445/2 to 2445/5, came on the July 14, 2025 direction by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, in his capacity as Minister of Finance, Economic Stabilisation, and National Development.
