Sri Lankans will have to spend the day with 8-10 hour power cuts in the New Year if the Energy Ministry fails to import necessary coal stocks with immediate effect, the Public Utilities Commission (PUCSL) announced.
PUCSL chairman Janaka Ratnayake said that the existing coal stock to run the Norochcholai power plant is only sufficient till next month and he has directed to shut down one generator at the power plant.
This recommendation was made to manage the present energy crisis situation and it was highly necessary, he pointed out.
Only five shipments of coal had arrived in the island since August up to now and it was not sufficient to meet the demand, he disclosed.
The Ministry has no option other than going for the extension of power cuts for long hours as it could bring down only a limited number of coal shipments till April 15 next year which is not adequate to operate the Norochchcolai power plant at full capacity, Ministry sources confirmed. (Bandula)
