State Minister for Supply and Registration of Pharmaceuticals, Prof Channa Jayasumana warned the public that the government has plans to provide Pfizer vaccines as the booster shot only for a limited period.
He said that the government bore extra costs and imported Pfizer vaccines as the people requested the high efficiency vaccine for them. However the authorities have witnessed a drop in vaccinations despite issuing Pfizer as the booster vaccination.
“People have lost fear of COVID-19 as they have taken both doses of vaccine and witnessed a reduction in the death rate, therefore they have decided not to get the booster”, he said
Prof Jayasumana pointed out that the booster dose of the vaccine is given as the immunity of vaccinated persons drops within a span of six months.
He explained that a booster vaccine is essential to curb the spread of the Omicron variant which spreads at a faster rate
