Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said today that he had requested the Ministry of Public Administration to amend the circular permitting public servants to report to work wearing suitable, casual attire to clear up any ambiguity in relation to teachers.
The minister stated this in response to a question raised by National Freedom Front MP Jayantha Samaraweera, who drew the minister's attention to reports that some teachers had attended schools yesterday wearing casual attire.
Minister Premajayantha said the Education Ministry has not issued any circular regarding the attire worn by teachers and that the Public Administration Ministry circular permitting public servants to report to work in casual attire had been issued during the COVID pandemic. "The circular is being interpreted as applying to teachers as well since they too are public servants. I have asked the Public Administration Ministry to amend the circular to explain the matter. We will see what happens after that," he said.
The minister added that he had seen photographs circulating on social media claiming to show teachers in casual attire and that from what he had seen, many of the photographs do not appear to have been taken in a school setting.
