Officers of the Nugegoda Division Crime Investigation Unit have arrested a suspect on charges of ATM Card fraud.
The unit had arrested the 24-year-old suspect following an investigation into more than 50 complaints being lodged at the Piliyandala, Kottawa, Dehiwala, Mirihana and Maharagama police station with regard to funds being stolen with the aid of forged ATM cards, Police Media Unit said.
The suspect, a resident of Piliyandala, was taken into custody yesterday (10) with 15 forged ATM cards in his possession.
Investigations have revealed that the suspect had approached various individuals at ATM machines in various locations on the guise of helping them to withdraw cash using their ATM cards. He had then deceived them into revealing their PIN number to him. After obtaining the PIN number in this manner, the suspect had allegedly switched the real ATM card in his victim's possession with one of the forged ATM cards he had with him when handing over the cash they had withdrawn. He had thereafter used the genuine ATM card to steal funds from his victims.
The suspect is due to be produced before the Nugegoda Magistrate's Court today. Mirihana Police are investigating.
