A suspect who allegedly stole a vehicle valued at Rs. 6.8 million and a mobile phone worth about Rs. 11, 000 that had been inside the vehicle has been arrested by police in Buttala.
Police Media Unit said the 30-year-old suspect, posing as a potential buyer, had contacted the vehicle owner, who had put his vehicle up for sale. He had then traveled to Hanwella, where the victim lived on July 8 and had taken the vehicle out on what he claimed was a test drive.
However, along the way, the suspect had tricked the vehicle owner into getting down from the vehicle to check the vehicle before suddenly driving away with the vehicle.
Acting on a complaint made by the victim, the Hanwella Police had commenced an investigation into the vehicle theft. Acting on information provided by them, officers from the Buttala Police had tracked down the suspect and arrested him in the Pelwatta area in Buttala.
