Sri Lanka’s average accident rate has increased to 10 deaths per day, according to the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Ajith Rohana.
DIG Rohana addressing a recent event said that a new trend of ‘road terrorism’ was emerging with the indiscipline on roads.
Earlier the average number of road accident-related deaths were around eight but has been increasing over the past few weeks. Over the weekend a series of accidents were reported in various parts of the country.
In one of the latest accidents reported three persons travelling on a motorcycle collided with an oncoming lorry in Puttalam last night and one of them were killed. Two others are in serious condition and transferred to the National Hospital in Colombo.
The lorry driver claimed that in order to avoid another motorcycle that cut across his path he was forced to cut across to the opposite lane resulting in the accident. A 28-year-old person was killed in the accident. Pix by Hiran Priyankara
