A tense situation was reported at the Jaffna bus stand today when a protest organized by Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) was met with a counter-protest by a group reported to be supportive of the government.
The SJB Women Wing led by Hirunika Premachandra took part in the protest condemning the government’s failure to address the economic crisis and shortage of essential items and fuel.
Protesters demanded that government should step down immediately while acknowledging their inefficiency in administration and failure to ensure people are provided with basic needs.
A local group, believed to be supportive of the government arrived at the bus station and a tense situation erupted when both parties shouted slogans.
Additional Police personnel were deployed at the scene. With the intervention of the police, the group was sent in a tuk-tuk. (Pix by N.Lohathayalan)
