The term of the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha is set to end on March 6, after the budget was defeated for the fourth consecutive time today.
A senior Local Government official said that since the budget has been defeated for the fourth time under the Local Council Act a Special Commissioner would take over.
The budget was defeated by two votes with 14 voting against and 12 in favour.
The JVP showing rare solidarity with the SLPP they were among the 14 members who opposed the budget.
Seven SLPP members along with six UNP members now supporting the SJB and the JVP member opposed the budget.
Earlier Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena has issued a special gazette extending the term of office of Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha members.
Accordingly the local government body had been given an extension until November 04, 2024.
The Elpitiya PS commenced its period later than other councils due to an election petition.
