A delegation from Thailand arrived in Sri Lanka on November 5, 2024, to collaborate on sustainable solutions for the human-elephant conflict affecting both countries.
Thai delegates exchanged in-depth ideas with Environment, Wildlife, Forestry, Water Resources, Plantation, and Infrastructure Minister Vijitha Herath about the challenges faced by both elephants and local communities due to the ongoing conflict.
Led by Sakchai Tonjaroen, Chairman of the Thai Parliamentary Committee on Natural Resources and Environment, the 16-member team included Thai officials and experts in wildlife management.
The delegation engaged in extensive discussions with Sri Lankan officials, including Environment Ministry Secretary B. K. Prabath Chandrakirthi and Thai Ambassador Paitoon Mahapannaporn. The Thai team shared insights from their experience managing human-elephant interactions in 24 Thai districts, focusing on innovative management strategies that could also be useful in Sri Lanka.
The Thai delegation emphasized the importance of elephant safety and the reduction of human-elephant encounters, underlining the need for efficient, technology-driven solutions. The officials also expressed Thailand’s commitment to advancing comprehensive studies on elephant behavior and conflict mitigation.
The team plans to visit prominent conservation areas, including Minneriya and Kaudulla National Parks, to gain a deeper understanding of Sri Lanka’s conservation efforts. Their visit concludes on November 8 with a tour of Hurulu Eco Park.
