The government to digitize Foreign Employment Bureau
The government decided to digitize the Foreign Employment Bureau with a view to streamlining its functions.
Accordingly the relevant legal procedures are currently underway and once they are completed the digitization process will begin stated Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism Vijitha Herath.
The Minister said that the Bureau itself must be regulated before regulating foreign employment agencies and workers.
“The old practice of sending workers abroad through a minister's list will no longer continue. Currently 78% of the workers that go abroad are trained laborers. This year will mark a year when the highest foreign exchange in history has been earned.
Our goal is to reduce the number of people going abroad, strengthen the national economy, create more employment opportunities within the country and build a nation where people prefer to stay rather than leave" further said Minister Vijitha Herath speaking at the 40th anniversary celebration of the Foreign Employment Bureau held at the Presidential Secretariat.
