Two Police Sergeants and a civilian were detained by villages after they had slaughtered a pregnant deer in the Galkiriyayagma area and subsequently handed over to the Police.
The Wildlife officials and Policemen were involved in a heated exchange of words as the Wildlife officials wanted to arrest the three suspects.
The two sergeants and the civilian had shot the deer and were trying to take away the carcass, but villages who had woken up around 3.00 a.m. after hearing the sounds of gunfire had carried out a search and found the suspects.
They were tied them on to a tree and the police and wildlife officials were alerted.
Wildlife officer Sandun Hemanayake strongly objected to the suspects taken over by the Police, however a senior police officer had intervened and insisted that the suspects be handed over to the Police.
Accordingly the suspects were taken away by the Makulugama Police.
The two police sergeants were from the Giranegama and Madatugama Police stations.
