An 11 year old survived a tragic road traffic accident that killed three persons including his parents last night (April 4).
A police sergeant, his wife and elderly father were killed and his 11-year-old son survived with injuries when the three three-wheeler they were travelling in collided head-on with a cab last night (04) in Nugayaya area on the Wellawaya-Thanamalwila road,, police said.
R.M. Chandraratne (44) who was attached to the Thanamalwila police, Dilka Siromali (42) and R.M. Ackman (70) died from the accident while their son Anuhas Sithija (11) is currently undergoing treatment at the Monaragala district general hospital. They were residents of Wellawaya Paragasmankada area.
The driver of the cab, a 38-year-old resident of Lunugamwehera, has been arrested by the police.
Police said initial investigation has revealed that the suspect was under the influence and did not possess a valid driver's license.
The post-mortem on the deaths are scheduled to be held today (05) at the Wellawaya Base Hospital.
Wellawaya police is conducting investigation.
