Three officials deployed on election duty, one police officer and two civil officers, have died suddenly from reported natural causes, the police said.
At a special media briefing today, Police Spokesman DIG Nihal Thalduwa confirmed that all three officials experienced sudden illnesses while on duty in various locations this morning.
Among the deceased was a 33-year-old police officer stationed at a school in the Urumburai area in Kopai, who is believed to have suffered a heart attack.
A 48-year-old woman, serving as the chief of the polling station at Siri Sadaham Bhikshu Aramaya in Kesbewa, also died after falling ill on duty; she was a resident of Payagala and passed away after being admitted to Piliyandala Hospital.
Additionally, a 57-year-old man on the polling center staff in Kobeigane died after a sudden illness while on duty.
DIG Thalduwa added that post-mortem examinations are scheduled to confirm the causes of death, though initial reports suggest heart attacks as a likely cause in all three cases.
