Three persons who were on a hunting trip in the Tabbowa sanctuary southern border were arrested today (22), the Karuwalagaswewa Wildlife Range Office said.
The suspects, one identified as a director of a private firm and the other two residents of Kiribathgoda and Karuwalagaswewa, were armed with a pistol, gun, ammunition and a sharp weapon, and were using a vehicle belonging to the Ministry of Indigenous Medicine at the time of arrest.
The wildlife officials said that further investigations revealed that the Karuwalagaswewa resident had over 100 grams of dried deer meat at his residence.
The suspects claim they had entered the sanctuary during the early hours to have a glimpse of elephants. Yet the officers point out that bringing weapons into the sanctuary is illegal.
The suspects are to be produced before Puttlam Magistrate Court.
