A traffic police constable of the Maharagama Police who assaulted a lorry driver on the main road in Pannipitiya has been remanded until next Monday.
He was produced before the Nugegoda Magistrate’s Court today (30).
The assault took place after the Traffic OIC of the Maharagama Police station was knocked down by a 24-year-old lorry driver.
The officer who was directing traffic was walking on a narrow centre island when the lorry knocked him from the side. He fell over on to the opposite side of the road and was nearly run over by an oncoming car.
However, as the car was driving at a relatively low speed the driver managed to stop the vehicle.
The traffic policeman who observed the incident assaulted the driver and when he fell down he jumped on to his body.
The driving license of the lorry driver from Haputale was suspended with immediate effect.
The injured OIC is receiving treatment at the Kalubowila hospital.
