The Treasury has informed the Election Commission that they cannot ensure continuous funding for the conduct of the upcoming Local Government elections.
The Treasury’s position was conveyed when the Commission members met with Treasury Secretary Mahinda Siriwardena and officials at the Election Commission office at Rajagiriya.
The Treasury officials said that in view of the series of circulars issued and the lack of funds they cannot ensure if funds could be provided on a continuous basis for the elections.
Soon after the meeting the Election Commission issued a statement that the postal vote scheduled for next week has been postponed indefinitely.
The Commission in a statement said that as the Government Printer failed to provide the ballot papers in time they cannot go ahead with the vote scheduled for next week.
