A powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck near Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula today, activating tsunami warnings across the Pacific.
Japan, the United States, Guam, and Alaska issued alerts. Small waves already reached Hokkaido, with larger ones up to 3 metres expected. Hawaii ordered evacuations, while California, Oregon, and Washington remain on alert.
In Russia, waves up to 4 metres hit coastal areas. No deaths have been reported, but a kindergarten was damaged.
Experts say it’s one of the world’s strongest quakes in decades. People are advised to stay on high ground until warnings are lifted.
