Twenty Sri Lankans jailed in Kuwait for drug related offences were returned back to the country under an extradition agreement today.
The prisoners were escorted by 50 Kuwaiti guards and arrived at the Bandaranaike International Airport today afternoon.
The extradition treaty between the two countries was signed in 2007 and for the first time last year 32 Sri Lankan prisoners were returned to the country.
The Lankans were held in the Central Jail of Kuwait for offences including use of narcotics and trafficking drugs.
The Kuwaiti guards will return to their country after spending a day’s holiday at a five start hotel in Colombo.
The prisoners were transferred to the Welikada prisons soon after their arrival.
