Two Indian nationals who were allegedly attempting to smuggle gold were arrested inside the Bandaranaike International Airport yesterday by officers attached to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) stationed inside the airport.
The gold weighing 1.2 kilograms had been divided into pellets and coated with a gel, making them easier to smuggle, according to the CID.
The gold had been brought inside the BIA by a 43-year-old Indian national who had arrived in the country on a flight from Dubai. He had then handed over the gold to another 28-year-old Indian national who was at the BIA waiting to board flight to Chennai.
CID officers who were on surveillance duty inside the Departure Lounge of the BIA had noticed the suspicious behaviour of the suspects and questioned them, whereupon they found the gold and arrested the suspects.
The gold and the two suspects have been handed over to Customs officials for further investigations.
