Two Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MPs have been arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in connection with the May 9 attacks on peaceful protesters outside Temple Trees and at Galle Face.
Former State Minister and SLPP Puttalam District MP Sanath Nishantha and Gampaha District MP Milan Jayathilake were arrested by the CID this evening.
The two are among several SLPP MPs, including former ministers, that the Attorney General *AG) has directed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to arrest and produce in court in connection with the attacks on peaceful protesters on May 9.
The AG earlier directed the IGP to arrest and produce 22 persons in court in relation to the attacks. They include former Minister Johnston Fernando, SLPP Kalutara District MP Sanjeeva Edirimanna Moratuwa Mayor Samanlal Fernando, Colombo Municipal Councilor Mahinda Kahandagama, former Western Provincial Councilor Amal Silva and Dan Priyasad.
Former Western PC member Amal Silva and an employee of the Moratuwa Municipal Council were arrested earlier today in connection with the attacks and produced before court, where they were remanded in custody till Wednesday (18).
