Two arrested over Australian job scam

Two women who allegedly scammed Rs 1.8 Million worth of money by promising people jobs in Australia were arrested Friday at Ella –Demodara area in Badulla District, Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) said. 

The two suspects aged 38 and 32 identified as residents of Wekanda, and Naulla areas in Demodara have been arrested following the raid carried at the Demodara by SLBFE’s special investigation unit based in Colombo.

They were produced before the Bandarawela Magistrate today (27), where they were released on a personal bail of Rs. 200, 000 each. Acting Bandarawela Magistrate Amila Ranatunga also ordered the suspects to appear at the SLBFE's Hali-Ela office on the last Wednesday of each month. 

The two suspects have obtained Rs 400,000 from a resident at Namunukula area promising him employment at a hotel in Australia.

Investigations revealed that the suspects had similarly obtained another Rs 450,000 from a man and woman residing at demodara area, while obtaining another Rs 500,000 from another official.

Further investigations are ongoing to arrest another suspect in Colombo in connection with the racket, a senior SLBFE official said. (By Prasad Rukmal in Ella and Palitha Ariyawansa in Badulla)
