Two elephants have been killed in an accident with a train in the morning, the Department of Wildlife Conservation said today (May 13).
A night mail train travelling from Colombo to Trincomalee has met with an accident with three elephants near the 151 4/3 post between Agbopura and Kithul Uthuwa railway stations.
Two elephants have died while the third elephant has been injured and escaped into the nearby National Park.
Railway officials state that the train was delayed by two hours as a result.
The Department of Wildlife Conservation states that such accidents are frequent on railway tracks in the Somawathi and Kaudulla National Parks.
