Two school girls were killed after the car driven by their father crashed on to a lorry on the southern expressway, a coroner’s court inquiry was told today in Galle.
The uncle of the two girls, Mahanama Rajapaksha, 34, told the inquiry that his brother-in-law, was returning home on the expressway with the family members after consulting a doctor for the eldest daughter in Colombo when the incident occurred.
He said the father of the two children had fallen asleep and crashed into the lorry in front of him. He said he had woken up and tried to steer the vehicle away from the lorry, but yet the left hand side of the vehicle had hit the lorry in a location between Pinnaduwa and Imaduwa.
The younger daughter Senudhi Dhamsara, 10, was in the front seat (Left hand side) and the eldest daughter Isumi Radheesa, 12, was on the left hand side rear seat.
Mr Rajapaksha said the mother of the two children seated in the rear seat and the driver too received injuries and were rushed to the Galle hospital.
He said his sister, (mother of the two children) was a teacher in Matara while his brother-in-law was a businessman.
The post mortem was conducted by JMO Dr Janaki Warsuahendi while the coroner’s inquiry was conducted by Chandrasena Lokuge.
