Two women decked in excessive Jewellery, made of 22 carat gold, returning from employment in Saudi Arabia were nabbed at the Bandaranaike International Airport on Friday night, Customs officials said.
They were in possession of 932 grams of gold jewellery valued at Rs 20.8 million and had tried to leave the airport via the Green channel claiming they had nothing to declare to the Customs.
The two women, aged 29 and 35 years from Kurunegala were employed in a cleaning service company in Saudi.
Under customs laws, 22 carat gold cannot be brought into the country and investigations revealed that they had brought the gold items for business purposes.
The gold jewellery has been confiscated and a fine has been imposed on them.
