President Ranil Wickremesinghe urged officials to provide thorough plans right away for achieving the country's goal of increasing annual export earnings through improvements in gem and jewellery exports and re-exports.
He expressed his views during a recent discussion on issues within the gem and jewellery industry held at the Presidential Secretariat.
The President stressed the need for prompt resolution of issues in the gem and jewellery sector in order to increase export revenue for the nation.
He emphasized that relative to the previous year, the industry's progress toward the target growth has fallen short of expectations.
As a result, he stressed the importance of putting in place a well-organized plan with the goal of achieving an annual export revenue of at least two billion US dollars.
