The driver of the van used to forcibly remove an ATM machine of a private bank in the Gampola area has been arrested by the police on suspicion of his involvement in the robbery, Police said.
The driver has claimed that the robbers had only hired his vehicle from Aranayake and used it to remove the ATM machine which reportedly had more than Rs seven million cash.
The robbery took place in the early hours of yesterday.
Four armed persons overpowered the security guards and took away the entire machine after disconnecting it from the system.
The van used to remove the machine was found at the Peradeniya – Galaha junction yesterday. The driver who was blindfolded had called the police after he was left behind with the van.
The ATM machine had been taken away by the robbers.
However, Police believe that the van driver had an involvement as he had made contradictory statements.
