The Water Supply and Drainage Board has laid pipes carrying water on the pavement of the bridge situated on the road leading from Kataragama to Sellakataragama since more than three years, the residents told the media.
As a result the residents and the pilgrims are compelled to walk on the middle of the road risking their lives from the road accidents.
When the media inquired from Hambantota District Engineer of Water Board he said that these water pipes were outside the bridge but they were washed away with the water under the bridge about 3 years back. So that these pipes had to be temporarily laid on the pavement of the bridge.
The engineer said that action would be taken to remove the pipes from the pavement and lay them outside the bridge as soon as possible.
Below are the pipes laid on the pavement of the bridge.
