The Women Parliamentarians’ Caucus condemned the gang-rape of a 16-year-old girl in Thanamalwila and expressed dismay at the failure of the authorities to give justice to the victim.
Chairperson of the Caucus Dr. Sudarshini Fernandopulle said the brutality of the incident highlights the failure of all responsible authorities of Sri Lanka to carry out their duties in a conscientious, responsible and accountable manner.
“The gross violations of women’s and children’s rights are unacceptable and must not be tolerated,” Dr. Fernandopulle said in a statement.
She said all necessary measures must be taken to prevent such incidents and safeguard the rights and dignity of every girl child in Sri Lanka.
