The Matale Victoria monument which dates back to 1837 was destroyed when a vehicle crashed onto it yesterday (Jan 14), Matale Chief Minister Daljith Aluvihare said.
He added that the police are conducting investigations after they were notified about the incident.
Speaking about the incident, Mr. Aluvihare said that he received a call at around 5:20 am from a watchman at the Matale Town Hall and a policeman who was on night duty at the Matale courts saying that they had heard a loud noice and had also seen a black van fleeing the area.
